Large MMW capacity wind turbines offshore are possible because of the more regular and higher velocity winds off the coast capable driving the huge blades. But the marine offshore environment causes corrosion problems to most areas of the wind turbine.

Corrosion Protection of Wind Turbine Control System

The turbine nacelle and hub are designed to inhibit the ingress of water, however due to the harsh marine environment of high velocity winds containing salt, MLS employs additional measures to protect instrument control and related electrical systems.

Pitch and yaw systems and control system components are protected against condensation, dampness and subsequent corrosion.  Anti-condensation heaters are fitted to protect from condensation and dampness. 

Availability, Reliability & Access

Operation and maintenance of offshore wind turbines is more challenging and costly than equivalent onshore units.  Environmental protection of wind turbine control system components is coupled with the additional requirement for high reliability components.

MLS designs its pitch and yaw systems as well as its control systems for reduced maintenance.  Particular emphasis is placed on component reliability as well as overall design improvements such as the previously mentioned corrosion protection, component modularity and component siting.

  • Reducing the overall number of components and simplicity of design
  • A modular design approach which facilitates the interchange of faulty modules
  • Use of highly reliable integrated components
